Bob Woodman

The Article

At a charity event Bob Woodman is a fast-talking, crowd-pleasing entertainer. Not a standup comic, Bob turns his skills as a professional auctioneer to helping others. Once terrified of public speaking, he was tongue-tied at his first auction. "Now," Bob says, "when I'm in the zone, focused and feeling good, everything just rolls along." When he's in the groove calling for Dodd's Auctions and Appraisals (which he co-owns) he spends just 30 seconds per item, selling 120 an hour.

And Bob dedicates the same determination to fitness. His true passion is paddling with wife Linda, and racing outrigger and marathon canoes with the Vernon Racing Canoe Club (our old name). He first tasted competition at age 13 canoe racing with pal Scott Siemens in the Okanagan Landing Regatta. "I never paddled before and the two mile race felt like a hundred miles," he says.

In the 80's he tried triathalon, completing three Ironman races. Then in 1992, he rediscovered paddling, first dragonboat, then outrigger, marathon canoe and surf ski, finally taking three World Masters marathon and outrigger gold medals in 2005.

His most recent escapade was La Classique, Quebec's 125-mile three-day marathon stage race with paddling partner Glen Bond, Silver Star's nordic director. Bob paddles year round. He says, "When you live in the Okanagan, the lake is the place you want to be." --Patti Shales Lefkos
